The Pulse of Entertainment: ‘The Solo Piano Group’ Series Highlights Pianist Glen Pearson

Atron Gregory, TNT Recordings founder and producer of ‘The Solo Piano Group’ project.

*“It’s a series of projects,” said producer Atron Gregory about the “Sunrise” single release from his “The Solo Piano Group” (TNT Recordings) project. “It’s a collection of musicians I know. It’s Neo-Classical…a new-age style of music.”

Gregory explained that normally African-American musicians and artists are not mentioned when referring to this style genre, but according to Atron we are present. His goal is to highlight black musicians that play Neo-Classical and introduce the genre to a new audience. Known for helping to pioneer Hip-Hop music as manager and producer via his TNT Recordings and Management company, Atron Gregory help launch the careers of some of the most notable Hip-Hop artists and groups of our time, such as Tupac Shakur and MC Smooth, and one of the Jazz world’s pioneers – Stanley Clark.

“It’s to commemorate all the African-American pianists,” he said about why his label decided to embrace the Neo-Classical genre. “I didn’t believe it, that there were no (Neo-Classical) labels…independent…as part of our culture.”

Neo-Classical is any style of music influenced by classical music (Mozart and Beethoven). It’s about doing more with less. It’s shorter than classical selections with an emphasis on complex rhythms. It uses an array of tones that are not necessarily in harmony on acoustic instruments that provide an electronic sound, such as with synthesizers. Atron is familiar with all types of music which has included Hip-Hop, Jazz, R&B and Gospel. So I guess you can say Neo-Classical is where Classical music and Jazz meets.

“The Solo Piano Group” album’s single releases are “Bedtime Lullaby” by pianist Derek McKinney on March 20, 2020; “Mellow Moods” by pianist Janice Maxine Reid on May 8th; “Sunrise” by pianist Glen Pearson on July 17th, and “Peace and Love” by pianist Michaela Overall on August 14th.

“I live in the Bay area. He (Glen Pearson) is my Bay area connection,” Atron said about Glen whose single was released at the time of my interview. “Bill Bell, head of music at the College of Alameda…spawn many entertainers and when it was time for him to retire, Glen decided he was tired of touring and took his place – he had a relationship with Professor Bell.”

Professor Bill Bell was known as The Jazz Professor and he helped mold many African-American musicians and artists into icons, such as Lou Rawls and The Supremes. Glen Pearson’s credits are just as impressive with a long history touring as pianist for the Count Basie Orchestra and scoring for the History Channel. He was the musical director of the Boys Choir of Harlem and pianist for Regina Belle, Melba Moore, Will Downing and Gerald Albright. His skills also landed him gigs on Broadway in shows that starred Gregory Hines, Arthur Miller and Patrick Stewart.

“My first introduction into music was as tour manager. Janice (Maxine Reid) was on the tour. She later became a teacher – Ledisi is one of her students. She teaches vocals and piano,” he pointed out. “‘The Solo Piano Group’ is me introducing our community to Neo-Classical new-age music. I want to introduce musicians to opportunities within that music genre, because it (the music) calms and sooths.”

Atron Gregory’s label TNT Recordings and Management was established in 1988. It played a major role in making the music of the Hip-Hop culture a well excepted genre and lifestyle; propelling artists to household-name status alongside Def Jam, Ruthless Records and Death Row Records. TNT Recordings and Management credits include the works of four-time Grammy nominated Tupac Shakur;  12-time Grammy nominated/three-time Grammy winner Jazz bass player Stanley Clark; two-time Grammy nominated Jazz pianist Rodney Franklin; American Music Award nominated N. W. A. (Niggaz With Attitudes) on Ruthless Records, noted as pioneers of Gangsta Rap which consisted of DJ Yella, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Eazy E and MC Ren; MTV Music Video Award and Grammy Award nominated Digital Underground which was formed by Shock G, Money B and Chop Master, and included – at one time or another – Kel Mitchell, Mack, Mystic, Saafir, DJ Fuze, and J Beats with Tupac acting as hype-man and background vocalist, and World Class Wreckin’ Cru, a group of aspiring DJs and MCs, formed by DJ Alonzo Williams (Eve After Dark night club owner) which also featured DJ Yella and Dr. Dre, with Michel’le as featured vocalists. TNT Management still handles Shock G of Digital Underground, Digital Underground, the catalog of Johnny “Guitar” Watson, and FGW Productions which provides content for Universal Pictures, Warner Bros, Paramount and Disney. All of these achievements are proof that Atron Gregory has the ability to make Neo-Classical an accepted genre by African-Americans and the African-American musicians of the genre household names in all communities starting with release of “The Solo Piano Group” project.

LOS ANGELES, CA – NOVEMBER 29, 2015: Kobe Bryant #24 of the Los Angeles Lakers Leaves Staples Center with wife Vanessa Laine Bryant (L) and a family member following a news conference talking about his retirement after the basketball game against the Indiana Pacers November 29, 2015, in Los Angeles, California. *As you can imagine, Vanessa Bryant has been going through a lot since her husband, Kobe, and daughter, Gianna, were killed in that now infamous helicopter crash this past January. It is a time like this that you would think that widow Bryant would want her dear mother, Sofia Laine, by her side. Well, apparently NOT. At least not anymore.

That’s because Sofia revealed during a recent interview that her daughter kicked her to the curb after the tragic death of the NBA super star.

In the interview (in Spanish) that’s set to air on Univision on Monday (09-21-20), Sofia Laine claims that her relationship with her daughter is on the rocks. However, in the sneak peek shared to Instagram, Sofia was seen saying that Kobe Bryant has been laid to rest in a private cemetery. Then she started crying, saying that Vanessa not only told her to leave get out of the house, but she also demanded that she return her car, as well.

The mom of four allegedly told Sofia, “You need to leave my house and give me my car.”

Something tells us a lot of people – even those that don’t speak Spanish – will be tuned in to that Univision broadcast on Monday.

In the meantime, check out the clip below.

This revelation is no doubt shocking to some, considering that Vanessa and her mom have always seemed close. Even after the helicopter crash that claimed Kobe and Gianna’s lives, it was reported that Sofia and Vanessa grew even closer. Well, obviously something changed.

As we reported, Kobe died on January 26, when the helicopter that he and Gianna rode crashed in Calabasas, California while en route from John Wayne Airport to Camarillo Airport. Including Kobe and his daughter, everyone else was killed in the accident. His death sparked multiple remembrances and tributes, including a memorial outside of the Kobe Bryant Gymnasium at Lower Merion High School in Ardmore, Pennsylvania, which Kobe attended from 1992 to 1996.

Kobe and Gianna were buried in a private funeral in Pacific View Memorial Park in the Corona del Mar neighborhood of Newport Beach, California on February 7. A public memorial service was held on February 24 at the Staples Center, where’s Kobe’s team, the LA Lakers, play.

WOW … Can An Old Politician Learn New Tricks?

Can an old politician learn new tricks?

top of page andre harper sept 20 issue

*With November approaching, I’d like to ask a question. What is an acceptable term for our politicians? Currently our representatives can serve for their lifetime.

With no term limits, they hold their position until they are voted out, retire or replaced when they die. What is your take on career politicians? For me, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

However, if it is broken, it’s time for fresh tactics. With election day coming, it’s time to grade your reps. Who’s passing & who’s failing their two/four year evaluation? Have they earned another term or is it time for new blood. To steal a quote from Jesus, “No one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins, the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined.” Luke 5 verse 37. I think we have all witnessed a mess like that before.

Now I know what you may be thinking. What if neither option is appealing? That’s bad news if they happen to be your doctor. But the good news is, they are not. They are replaceable contractors hired to do a job. We must pick one or no work gets done. So pick wisely. Keeping in mind that they need to campaign again in two to four years.

I have never been a hiring manager, however I know their evaluation on whom to hire falls on the candidate with the least amount of red flags. And if that person doesn’t work out, they are soon replaced. So, are you happy with the status of your community? What Senator and house representative shares your vision for your neighborhood? After all they make the law for it. Are schools taken care of by your State Board of Education members? Are there just and fair laws handed down by your District Judges and Attorneys? Are you pleased with enforcement by county courts and officers? Now is the time to make your voices heard. Because like it or not, the consequences fall squarely in our lap. Good or bad. So take some time to craft your team. Your community is counting on you.

Robin Givens Hits Mike Tyson, Jamie Foxx with Cease & Desist Over Biopic

Mike Tyson, Robin Givens

*Robin Givens has issued a cease & desist to keep her marital drams out of the upcoming Mike Tyson biopic starring Jamie Foxx.

On Thursday (September 17), Page Six reported that Givens has taken legal action to keep her name out of the script. She reportedly served both Tyson and Foxx with documents last month demanding “that Mr. Tyson cease and desist from further defaming Ms. Givens, and to put those producing, writing and/or directing the proposed Tyson biopic, and those producing Mr. Tyson’s podcast, on notice that they are to refrain from portraying Ms. Givens in a false, negative and defamatory light.”

“While [she] has attempted to move on, she still finds herself fighting the abusive, demeaning and false accounts of their relationship by Mr. Tyson nearly 35 years later,” Givens’s lawyers reportedly said. “It is time for Mr. Tyson to let this marriage be the relic of the past that it is.”

Givens spoken to Andy Cohen on his Sirius radio show in July and when asked whether she hopes she’s not in the movie at all, she said, “Of course” — adding, “the absolute truth would be absolutely yes.”

“You know what term you hear a lot recently, ‘My truth,’ I hear that term. For me, I kind of believe truth is truth,” she continued. “It’s Monday, 7:45 Pacific Time, there are certain things that are true and not true. And for somebody to take history and repurpose it or write what they want is so deeply upsetting to me. I don’t want to get bogged down in that … I think just to be able to lie … you throw enough mud, it sticks. We’re living in this time now where people can say all kinds of things and if you say it loud enough, people believe it.”

When Cohen suggests she reach out to the film’s producers, Givens noted that the #MeToo movement has made it so that she’s not have to do that.

“The climate’s been changed, so you have the #MeToo movement and things that used to be acceptable to do to women or say about women, I don’t think are necessarily acceptable now,” she said.

“I think to be on the other end of what I’ve experienced and to have somebody say, ‘The best punch I ever threw was against Robin and she bounced one wall to the next and was out,’” she continued, repeating a quote from the book “Fire and Fear: The Inside Story of Mike Tyson” attributed to Mike. “I’m literally praying that those things, we’re in a climate where it’s not acceptable, it’s not rewarded, it’s not congratulated and that’s something that truly means a lot to me.”

Givens and Tyson married in 1988, but she filed for divorce just eight months later. In an interview with Barbara Walters, she said being married to the famed boxer was “torture, pure hell.” Watch the interview via the YouTube clip above.
